America Strikes Back (Nov, 2001)
Master CNN 2007/10/16 03:42CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, CNN Correspondent: Air and cruise missile strikes hit targets around several major cities in Afghanistan causing civilians to flee according to CNN sources inside the country. They also tell CNN that airfields, air defenses, and command centers were struck. In an unprecedented move, the U.S. also began a humanitarian airdrop to Afghan civilians. The Taliban’s first angry reaction came from its ambassador to Pakistan, who accused the United States of, quote, “terrorist attacks.”

AMANPOUR: A little later, Taliban officials in the capital, Kabul, appeared on the Arab television network, Al-Jazeerah, with a message of defiance and bravado.

AMANPOUR: The United States denies it lost a plane. Later Al- Jazeerah broadcast this tape from Osama bin Laden surrounded by close associates issuing threats and a lengthily diatribe against U.S. policy in the Middle East. Analysts say this tape was shot professionally in daylight, but it’s not clear when. In it, bin Laden appears to all but claim responsibility for the September 11th attacks on the United States. Shortly after Sunday night’s attacks got underway in Afghanistan, there were a few small demonstrations here in Pakistan, with some political leaders calling for more on Monday.
